Purpose

When my Latino friends or family find out I studied to become a counselor I often hear “you are going to work with crazy people?”  Growing up I never knew about counseling, depression and anxiety were attributed to “nervios”.  It has been my experience that seeking mental health services such as counseling in the Latino community often labels you as crazy.  It is time to educate our community and take that label away.  Mental health should not be a taboo topic in our culture!

I will be using this blog as a way to (1) have more information about mental health in Spanish, (2) discuss issues in bilingual counseling, and (3) network with other bilingual counselors. There is a huge disparity between Latinos seeking mental health services compared to other ethnicities.  I want to take a step in bridging that gap.

The world is a dangerous place to live. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don’t do anything about it. – Albert Einstein
